Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic and largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean, plans to focus on expanding and upgrading its public transport system, on urban renewal planning and better connectivity, and on educating its 1-million strong population on their part in bringing down air pollution levels in their city and the National District.

"The City Council of the National District recognizes that air pollution represents a serious health and environmental risk for all, and that it is necessary to adopt measures at all levels of society to raise awareness about the problems caused and to improve the health and wellbeing of all. We are committed to guiding the National District towards sustainable systems of urban mobility and solid waste management, as well as to encourage the use of non-polluting energy."
