Balikpapan is the main gateway to east and north Kalimantan and a center for processing petroleum for Eastern Indonesia. Balikpapan, which has a population of 648,732 citizens, is also a buffer zone for the new national capital, which will be built nearby. The Government has committed to meeting national air quality standards through reducing greenhouse gas emissions, monitoring ambient air quality, and many activities that support urban air quality control.
Balikpapan is considered one of Indonesia's most liveable cities, and we intend to maintain this status even as our city grows through policies that support healthy air quality as well as sustainable urban development and climate change action."
