Located in Ecuador’s southern highlands, the beautiful mountain region of Azuay is home to 700,000 people, concentrated in the capital city of Cuenca. In its campaign for cleaner air, Azuay is focusing on sustainable agriculture and waste management. The strategy is strengthening food sovereignty, creating jobs and reforesting land in addition to cleaning up the air.
"With clear public policies, we will empower citizens to appreciate our natural resources and work to preserve them. Small cities and towns of our province could be territories of sustainable development, pushing at the grassroots level for more determined and courageous positions at the national level.
Viceprefect Ma. Cecilia Alvarado, Provincial Government of Azuay
