As a flagship leader of the BreatheLife campaign, Santiago Respira aims to reduce emissions in energy, transportation and waste management. Because of the city's valley terrain, air quality worsens during the winter when household heating soars. Older wood stoves pose a particular problem. Now, Santiago is implementing newer heating systems, improving its mass transit fleet and practicing more efficient waste management, combining vigorous policy actions with a strong commitment to raising awareness.
“With our new program to tackle air pollution, Santiago Respira, we believe we can breathe life back into Santiago."
Marcelo Mena, Minister of Environment, Chile
