The Basque Country is an autonomous region in northern Spain, which includes the municipalities of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Álava, Biscay, and Gipuzkoa. Over the past decade, the region has made impressive progress in reducing emissions and improving air quality. The Basque Country joins BreatheLife as an active partner in tackling the environmental challenges that face us all.
In the last decade, Basque Country has made very significant progress in terms of air quality, but we believe that air quality policy has to go beyond mere legal compliance so that it can effectively guarantee the protection of health and environment. So, our current Environmental Framework Programme applies guidelines from the European Union’s Environment Action Programme, which is premised on 'living well, within the limits of our planet'. Our policy focuses on cutting air pollution from transport, making information on air pollution more accessible and understandable to the public and developing our capacity to anticipate and act more effectively to control air quality.
