Commit to clean air

Take Action for Clean Air and Health

The world is at a turning point in the fight for clean air. Air pollution is a major threat to our health, the environment, and the economy—but we have the power to change that.

Take action now

As follow up to the WHO 2nd Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health, WHO is calling on governments, cities, institutions, and organizations to step up and commit to action. The goal?

A 50% reduction in the health impacts of air pollution by 2040*

*Using 2015 as a baseline

This is a global voluntary target, and every effort counts.

You can submit your commitments until 7 September 2025, the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies.

Over 50 stakeholders including countries, cities, donors, civil society organizations and academic institutions already committed to clean air actions. Explore the table below as well as more detailed actions pledged at the WHO 2nd global conference on air pollution and health.

Whether you’re already taking steps or planning future action, this is your opportunity to make it count.

Your commitment can cover one or more of the following key areas:

Governance, Policy & Finance

Creating the systems and investments needed to make clean air a priority.
Examples include aligning national air quality standards with WHO guidelines, improving health data systems, increasing funding, and boosting cooperation across sectors.

Institutional Capacity

Building the knowledge, tools, and infrastructure to protect health from air pollution.
This includes training health professionals, perform health impact assessments, developing early warning systems, and advancing research—especially in vulnerable or underserved communities.

Leadership & Awareness raising

Making air pollution a central part of public health and risk communication efforts.
This means integrating air pollution into health promotion or prevention activities such as health campaigns as well as public health surveillance or monitoring systems, promoting public awareness, community engagement & initiatives like BreatheLife.
